Some Thoughts

I have had many thoughts running through my head lately.  Most of them scattered and random, which makes them very difficult to put into words.  Here are a few of them.

  • I am so glad I can stay home with my kids.  I worked a few days last week and it was absolute torture. I only worked 2 days and for a total of 3 hours, but I hated it.  I am dreading working for 3 weeks around Thanksgiving time.  I want the extra money, but money is not everything!
  • I am LOVING going to the gym every morning.  I get up at 6 AM.  (I have NEVER been a morning person and so it may come as a shock that I get up this early.)  I work out for about an hour and then come home and get ready for the day.  My kids sleep in until about 9, which is why I can write this post right now, and so I have a little time to myself each morning.  I love it. (I should mention that I would never do this by myself.  I have a neighbor who goes to the gym with me.)  I love this time to think and get myself ready for the day.
  • I have thought a lot about positive energy.  I have really tried to be positive and look for the good in others.  I find myself a lot happier when I do.  I want to be a good friend and someone people enjoy being around.
  • I have also thought a lot about past friendships and acquaintances.  I often wonder how people are doing.  Facebook has been good to connect with people, but sometimes I just want to call people.  I have tried to follow through on promptings to contact people, but I could do better.  I think I might try and write someone an email or call someone every day.  Let them know I am thinking about them.  I like that idea.  I am going to start right now....

He will be greatly missed.  I am having a really hard time putting words together for this post.  He was such a great man and words are not flowing.
I think I will just finish with a few pictures and adjectives that describe Art.

I am thankful...

I am grateful for modern medicine!  If it weren't for modern medicine I wouldn't be alive!    My doctor is 99% sure I would've died during child birth if it weren't for modern medicine.  (Not to mention the fact I would've lost my child too.)
In addition to saving my life and my child I benefit from modern medicine nearly every day.  I have received allergy immuno therapy to relieve my symptoms from seasonal allergies.  To heal infections, improve concentration, help weight loss, stabilize hormones, and so many other things are just a few ways vitamins, supplements, and medication have helped me.
I have been so blessed by the benefits of modern medicine.I am so glad new science discoveries over the years has allowed us improve medicine!  It amazes me how much we know about how our bodies work and how we can keep them healthy!  How grateful I am for medical science.

I am thankful...

I am so grateful for the education I have.  College sure wasn't easy, but boy has it been worth it.  I absolutely LOVE being a speech language pathologist.  The knowledge I have is so...so...fascinating!  I literally learn something new every. single. day.
I loved working with children in early intervention.  The children had such sweet spirits.  I felt like I was working with children straight from heaven.  It was absolutely incredible!  I miss working with the sweet kids.  I love children!
I have to say I love working with the adult population as well!  Comparing working with kids and adults is like comparing chocolate and strawberries.  Both so delicious and sweet, yet so different in texture, taste, flavor, and color.
I am grateful I went to college and learned so much.  I know the Lord had a hand in guiding my decision to become a speech language pathologist.  It has been one of the most rewarding experiences.

I am thankful...

I am thankful for the blessing and opportunity to be a mother!  My son is the love and joy of my life.  When he was born I almost lost him.  I remember laying in the hospital bed for 8 hours waiting to meet my son for the first time.  I have never felt so helpless or alone in all my life.
I am so very grateful Grant is a part of our family!  He brings so much love and peace into our lives.  I don't know what I would do if I ever lost him.

Grant in the NICU shortly after he was born.

Grant at about 7 months old.

Grant is about 13 months old here.

Grant in San Diego and about 17 months old.

Sunday Thought On Monday

I have loved our new ward!  I still don't know a lot of members, but it comes with time.  The point of this post is the thoughts I want to share with you from our Relief Society and Priesthood meeting!  AMAZING!

The lesson was on marriage and what we can do to make our marriage better.  The first two quotes were great.  They came from a talk by President Monson.  The line I loved said,

"we should be fiercely loyal"

I love the word fiercely isn't it great?  I think it is so important to be 100% loyal to our spouse.  Then you add the word fierce in there and WOW!

The second quote I believe President Monson was quoting Elder Talmage, but I could be wrong.  The point is:

Choose your love,
Love your choice.

I love this.  I can't even think of the words to explain how neat this thought is.

I can tell you this.  I thought I was in love with Kyle when we decided to get married.  We have now been married for 7 1/2 years and we now love each even more.  Marriage isn't easy and it takes a lot of work.  The point is that I can focus on the bad things and let the negativity drive our marriage apart.  Instead I try to love Kyle for all the good moments and qualities.  I choose to love the man I chose to marry.  I love Kyle so much.

I hope if you read this you will be a little inspired to try a little harder to love the choice you made!

(I know I am.)

Inside Job

I hadn't heard of the movie Inside Job (IJ)until I had watched part of the Oscar's this year.  I briefly heard about IJ during the Oscar's but later found out what the movie is all about.

I think I can speak for the majority of the American, and even global population how awful the recession has been.  Millions of people lost their homes and millions of people world wide lost their jobs.  Thirteen million people in China alone lost their jobs.  I saw it all happen, but I  didn't understand why or how it happened.  Well, to sum it up in one word: GREED

IJ explains in detail how the recession we are currently in started back in the late 90's in Iceland.  I definitely can't explain it as well as Matt Damon does in IJ, but basically some big banking firms got a little greedy and made themselves a lot of money.

J. P. Morgan and Goldman-Sachs were two of multiple banking companies involved.   The banks borrowed billions of dollars, bet against the money they borrowed and then sold the money they didn't own.  It caused the whole market to crash around the globe.  The men and women involved deny they knew what they were doing.  In fact, some of them served as major financial advisors with President Clinton, President Bush, and President Reagan.  They passed laws to make it easier for these big banks to make more money.

No one has stopped them.  Nations around the globe know what they have done.  These men and women are still employed and earning MILLIONS while many place in the world hover around a 10% unemployment rate.

The major individuals involved with the recession have not lost their jobs.  They haven't lost $1.  They haven't had  to short sale their homes.  The major businesses are even more wealthy and more powerful than before.

IJ will make most middle class citizens mad.  It is irritating and frustrating to know how much we have lost and how much they have gained.

It is my opinion that there will be another recession.  I think the world will recover to some extent from the recession of 2008.  However, because there are still no changes and the same people and companies are still in power I predict this will all happen again.  I don't want it too, but I think it will.

If you read this post I challenge you to watch Inside Job and tell me what you think.

Small Things Made Large

I thoroughly enjoyed our Relief Society lesson on Sunday.  Our bishop is completely inspired.  I will try and give a quick summary.

Bishop Ahlquist started out by talking about how we all have ups and downs in life.  There are days, minutes, weeks, or months when we feel like we can't make it one more day.  We feel discouraged and hopeless at these points in our lives.  When we feel like giving up it is Satan telling us we can't make it any more.  Satan wants us to feel discouraged and helpless.  He wants us to give up. It is up to us to get up and keep going.  It is our choice to keep going and moving forward.

Our Bishop wanted us to know how much our Heavenly Father loves us.  He doesn't want us to give up.  We are never alone.

Then the Bishop led into why daily life gets us down.  Sometimes it is not events at all, but rather just daily life.  We all get frustrated and overwhelmed with our spouses, kids, jobs, coworkers, friends, callings, work, school, etc.  There is always something we are worried about.  We often have unexpected events and tasks that come up that interrupt our routines.  It is how we deal with these interruptions and changes that make the difference.

Bishop Ahlquist further explained that when we focus on these little interruptions and changes they become big and unbearable.  I love this concept.  I thought of how this concept applies to my own life.
Kyle and I have a good marriage.  We get along most of the time.  However, there are times when we don't agree.  There are times when we get on each others nerves.  It is usually never anything big, but it can seem big.  I find when I focus on the little irritating things Kyle does I go crazy.  I am not happy with our marriage at all. I am impatient and rude to my dear husband.  This doesn't go over very well.  Kyle then becomes irritated with me and our home is not a happy place.

When I don't focus on the small irritating things but rather the good things our marriage is 200 times better.  Instead I stay positive and focus on the good things Kyle does.  It is choice I have to make every day.  I have to choose which things I am going to focus on.  I can choose to be grateful Kyle cooked dinner last night or I can choose to nag about having to do the dishes.  I choose to be grateful for Kyle putting Grant to bed or complain about the clothes he didn't put away.

I appreciated Bishop Ahlquist for reminding me to stay positive and not focus on the negative things in life.  It isn't always easy to find the positive in every situation.  But I know that whatever I focus on becomes large and surmountable.  I hope you kind find the positive in everything every day!  It is up to each of us to choose the positive in every situation.

Princess Mommy

I love having a 3 year old around the house.  I am so grateful he is here to keep me company.  Kyle has moved up to Idaho and I really miss him.  Thank goodness Grant keeps me super busy. Today I was getting ready for church.  Grant was downstairs watching a show and when he came up I was in my dress. He said, "mom you are a pretty princess."  How sweet is that?  I love being a mom!

A Couple of Keepers

Kyle's uncle passed away right after Thanksgiving.  I really don't like people passing away between the holidays.  It can really put a damper on things.   It is so hard to be happy for the holidays when the people you love are missing.  I think it just isn't right.  This next statement is going to sound a little hypocritical, but I really enjoy funeral services.  Now I don't like the reason we are there or the heartbreak and sorrow that is felt.  I am not the morbid.  I do like the spirit of peace that is often at funerals.  It reminds me how small and insignificant this life is compared to eternity.  I am reminded at how lucky we are to believe in heaven.  I know we will get to see our lost friends and family again.  I like that reminder.  It really shoots my life back into perspective. (Maybe that is why it is ok for people to pass away during the holiday season.)

On a lighter note...
I took some pictures at the funeral services.  As I was editing them I found some real keepers.  I thought I would share.  ENJOY!

Great Grandpa Al.  (I always seem to get really good pictures of him at funerals.)

Kyle, Grant, and Lee (Grant is "cheesing" for the camera)

This really doesn't need any type of caption.  It is just cute.  I took this at the graveside service.
This is a question for anyone who has ever taken pictures for a funeral before.  I sort of feel like taking pictures at a funeral is a little irreverent.  I feel it would be like clapping during sacrament meeting. Does anyone else feel the same way?

The Zippy Decade

Who knows what they will call this decade, but I can't believe everything that has happened!  (I will do the last year in another post.)

2000:
I graduated from High School.
I was able to tour Europe with my mom and Grandma.  One of the sweetest vacations of my entire life.
The beginning of a long road of college education as a freshman at USU.  The biggest accomplishment being I survived ComdDe 2500 with Vicki Simonsmeier- the lady from h-e- double hockey stick.

2001
I moved in with 5 girls at the beginning of the school year.  It was a real personal and spiritual challenge living with 3 of them.  I really grew up a lot.
After a few months of looking I couldn't find a job anywhere in Logan and started a 3 year career at Convergys.

2002
I wished my dear sweet boyfriend the best of luck on his mission.
I witnessed the Winter Olympic Games in our own back yard.
I moved in with my dear friends Jill and Leslie

2003
I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in Communication Disorders.
I somehow managed to survive and entire summer living in Ogden and driving to Logan for work by 5 AM.  So, yes I left Ogden at about 345 AM.
I decided it wasn't worth driving to Logan every day all summer so I found a summer apartment and had a great time.
Started graduate school.
I welcomed my dear missionary home.

2004
I went through the temple for myself on March 17.  It was one of the most memorable days of my life.
Kyle and I were married on May 20.
I got my first real job at the school district.  I worked at Lomond View Elementary doing speech language therapy.  I loved it there.
I completed my course work for my Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology.

2005
We bought our Chevy Tahoe together.
We got our first cell phones.
Graduated with my Master's Degree with 12 other girls and 1 boy.  The 14 of us were the best of friends.  I still keep in touch with most of them.

2006
We bought our 1998 Toyota Camry after the head gasket blew in our old one.
We went on our first cruise.  It was wonderful.  I can't wait to go again.
We visited Lee, Kyle's brother, on his mission in Puerto Rico.
I got a new job in Logan working for Early Intervention through USU.
Erin, my sister, married Isaac in the Salt Lake Temple.

2007
Vacationed in Las Vegas for a week with Kyle's best friend and his wife.  It was a blast.
Kyle graduated with his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Kyle gets his first job with ATK Launch Systems.
We bought our first home together.
Found out we were pregnant with a baby boy.
My brother, Trace, married Sierra in the Salt Lake Temple.

2008
Our baby boy was born on February 24.
I some how managed working full time and having a brand new baby.
Kyle started his Master's Degree program with the University of Utah.
Grant, my father in law, passed away suddenly on December 8.

2009
We went to San Diego as a family.
Chris, Kyle's younger brother, graduated from High School.
Our baby turned 18 months and can go to nursery.

2010
We bought our new Dodge Ram Mega Cab truck.
Kyle graduated from the University of Utah with a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
We went on a weekend get away to Park City for the weekend.

I can't believe everything that has happened in the last 10 years.  I have graduated 3 times, moved 9 times, got married, had a baby, bought one house and 3 cars, laughed so hard I cried, cried so hard I laughed, and most of all loved almost every single minute of it.  I am looking forward to the next 10 years.  Bring it on!

A Short Testimony continued

I am really trying to finish the Book of Mormon by the end of the year.  I don't know if I will make, but I am trying.  I am almost done with Alma, which is a major accomplishment for me!  I actually enjoyed all of the wars.  I think it most curious to read about how fast people can fall in and out of the gospel.  I am amazed with the faith of Moroni and Teancum.  I have loved reading it.  I have learned so much.  The sad thing is I have already forgotten some of the stories.  I will have to read it again.  I have gained a real testimony this time of how true the Book of Mormon is.  It has been a wonderful experience!

A Tiny Testimony

Growing up I was a little "goodie goodie"  I also said I would be soo spiritual and my family would be "perfect."  We would have FHE every Monday night and go to church every Sunday and you get the picture.

We all know it is much easier said than done.  If you have come to my home I don't think any of my "lofty" goals are happening on a regular basis.  I have to say I really try to get my visiting teaching done every month.  I really enjoy going.  Some of my best friends have come from vt.  A few months ago the lesson was on scripture reading.  There was a quote in the article about how mothers needs to be "gospel powerhouses"

uh-oh. . i try but i wouldn't say i am a powerhouse

We challenged our sisters to open the scriptures and become a "powerhouse", myself  included.  I started reading the Book of Mormon again.  I haven't read it cover to cover since... oh...like...10 years ago.

Friday night I was reading Alma 12 and a MEGA light bulb came on and I figured out a major principle.  I am a little embarrassed to admit that I just figured this out, but maybe someone else didn't know it either.  So here it goes.

v. 12 And Amulek hath spoken plainly concerning death, and being raised from this mortality to a state of immortality, and being brought before the bar of God, to be judged according to our works.

after we die we will be brought to the judgement bar before God to be judged

v.13 Then if our hearts have been hardened, yea, if we have hardened our hearts against the word, insomuch that it has not been found in us, then will our state be awful, for then we shall be condemned

if our heart is hardened against God then we will condemned

v. 14 For our words will condemn us, yea, all our works will condemn us; we shall not be found spotless; and our thoughts will condemn us; and in this awful state we shall not dare to look up to our God; and we would fain be glad if we could command the rocks and the mountains to fall upon us to hide us from his presence.

we will have perfect recollection of every single naughty thing we thought, we said, and we did on this earth, our guilt will be so great that we will wish the rocks to fall on us and bury us

v.15 But this cannot be; we must come forth and stand before him in his glory, and in his power, and in his might, majesty, and dominion, and acknowledge to our everlasting shame that all his judgments are just; that he is just in all his works, and that he is merciful unto the children of men, and that he has all power to save every man that believeth on his name and bringeth forth fruit meet for repentance.

lucky for us through the atonement and because God is just and merciful he will see the intentions of our hearts and bring forth repentance

v.16 And now, behold, I say unto you then cometh death, even a second death, which is a spiritual death; then is a time that whosoever dieth in his sins, as to a temporal death, shall also die a spiritual death; yea, he shall die as to things pertaining unto righteousness
v.17 Then is the time when their torments shall be as a lake of fire and brimstone, whose flame ascendeth up forever and ever; and then is the time that they shall be chained down to an everlasting destruction, according to the power and captivity of Satan, he having subjected them according to his will.
v. 18 Then, I say unto you, they shall be as though there had been no redemption made; for they cannot be redeemed according to God's justice; and they cannot die, seeing there is no more corruption.

if we lived a life of sin on this earth when we get to the bar of God we will be cast to the "lake of fire and brimstone"...meaning that the guilt we will all feel as described in v. 15 will be forever with us.  it will never escape our minds and we will live forever in our sins.  there will have been no need for Jesus Christ for those people because at that point God can't redeem them.  they will live for eternity in their sins and guilt because there is no more death after this life.

here is what i learned:
first, wow! so i never want to have any unclean thought, deed, or word escape me.  i will get to feel the guilt for everything i did wrong all at once. i can't even imagine how awful i would feel
second, hell isn't a place, but a state of mind.  it is living with the constant thought of guilt.  it would be so awful you would feel like you mind was on fire.  the thoughts of guilt would never end.
third, the atonement is really the only way we will get to be rid of our sins. Christ paid for our sins and that makes me want to be a better person.
fourth, i want to be a better person because i don't want to have to stand before God covered in filthy guilt.  i need to strive to be better every day.  i know i can't be perfect, but i can certain put a little more effort into it.
fifth, i want to share the gospel with others, but i really want the members in my family who have lost their way to find Christ again.  i want them to be able to enter God's presence and live forever in peace and happiness.  they can come back and it isn't too late.
sixth, i see why every single person has to hear the word of God.  every single person needs a chance to be able to accept or decline this opportunity. it is strictly individual and we can't save any one but ourselves.

Welcome 2010!

I am finally done with all of the Christmas posts.  I was excited to share all of our fun memories with everyone.  I am glad to get them all posted before January 25, that would have just been sad.
I am really excited for 2010.  I enjoy this time of year  because it is an opportunity to look back on the last year.  Many things have changed, some things are the same, and other things are done.  My goals for 2009 are not completely accomplished, but I did accomplish something.
I have worked super hard on not swearing.  It still slips sometimes, but I have a lot more control than I used to.  Curse words used to be some of the first words that came to my mind.  Now I don't even think about cursing.  It took a long time and a lot of self control.  I appreciate it when people don't swear around me and especially Grant.  I know it is hard and I try not to judge because Kyle still swears frequently.
My goal to not be pregnant the entire year of 2009 was a success.  I am not pregnant and I feel great!
I really tried to read the Book of Mormon and I was pretty faithful about it during the first part of the year.  I have really slacked off.  I also didn't get a chance to go to the temple every month.  It is really hard to go by myself.  If anyone wants to start going with me please let me know.  I would like to set a day every month to go.  Our ward temple night is on Fridays, and that is a hard day for us.  I would like a week day.
I have been thinking about this year and the things I would like to do this year.  I have felt like I have needed to do two specific things and so those will be my first two goals.

1. Get on Family Search and start doing some family history work
2. Hold family home evening every week
3. Share my testimony more often (to nonmembers and also my family)
The next goals are more personal improvement goals.

4. Run  a 10K
5.  Get a website up and running to help families with children who have special needs

I think this year will be great year!  I am excited for the many opportunities to come!

30 Thankful Days

Alright so if you read this blog regularly you may be wondering what happened to the 30 days of gratitude.  I slacked off quite a bit and I apologize for that.  I have to say that doing this has helped me realize how much I have to be thankful for.  Most days I had a hard time picking just one thing to write about.  Towards the end I realized how much I have and so instead of spending time on my blog I was spending time with my family.  We have so much we take for granted.
I have a wonderful job and great co-workers who put up with my "slackiness" and "dinginess."  I am so grateful for the other SLP's I work with.  I feel like we are such an awesome team.  I love going to the office when they are around.
I am grateful for online shopping.  I have done a ton of shopping online this year.  I have found some fantastic deals online.  I have saved money, time, gas, sanity, and still got everything I wanted!  Yeah for online shopping!
I love this time of year!

30 Thankful Days

Day 18: Audio Books.  I do a lot of driving for work.  I have enjoyed listening to a variety of audio books. I was very grateful for my audio book today.  I needed to escape in a world of fantasy.

Day 19: Sick Kids.  I know most people are not very happy about having sick kids around, but in my line of work sick kids can be a good thing once in a while.  Today was supposed to be a crazy day with tons of back to back appointments, but because of a bunch of sick kids my 7 visits got reduced to 3.  Ahh!  Such a wonderful day.

Day 20: The Mysterious Ways of the Lord.  It never ceases to amaze me at how the Lord works in such mysterious ways.  Today events unfolded that really reminded me that I need to trust in the Lord with all of my heart.  The Lord knows each of us and knows what we need.  I just need to keep the faith that he knows what he is doing for me and my family.

Day 21:  Peaceful Saturdays.  Today was a wonderful day.  Kyle had to go to work for a while this morning and so Grant and I made waffles for breakfast.  I love waffles.  We played and read books.  He went down for a nap and then I got to work on my website for a little while.  Kyle came home and we hung out for a little while.  I got some of the "junk" organized so our spare room doesn't look quite so trashy.

30 Thankful Days

Day 15: Blair.  My little brother's birthday is  November 15.  I can't believe he is 19!  Holy Cow where does the time go. I have many fond memories of hanging out with him.  There is quite an age gap between us, but we still had fun cruising around in my dad's truck right after I learned how to drive.  I moved away to college when he was 10 so I feel like I have missed a lot of his life.  Oh wait I have! It was great to celebrate his birthday and spend time together as a family.  He is really cute with Grant.  Grant loves his Uncle Blair.

Day 16: Monday.  I honestly really don't like Monday's at all.  I have the hardest time getting back into the swing of things after the weekend.  I was grateful that I had home visits over the internet.  We call them VHV (Virtual Home Visits) and some people hate them.  I actually kind of enjoy them.  It is nice to just sit at the computer and wait for your families to log into the computer.  It's a nice break from driving around to their houses.

Day 17:  Kyle.  I am very proud of Kyle.  It is not new news that ATK keeps having lay offs.  We weren't super worried the first two rounds, but when last time Kyle's direct manager was laid off our worry boxes got full.  Kyle has since applied for a number of different jobs.  He had an interview today for a job at Hill AFB.  We won't know for at least 3 weeks because they have to do an extensive background check.  The job requires top secret military clearance and so they have to find all of Kyle's skeletons in his closet.  (He doesn't have many.)

30 Thankful Days

Day 13: Evy and Erin.  I got to meet up with my sister for a few minutes today.  It was a nice little surprise in the middle of a crazy day.  I miss my niece a lot.  I don't get to see her often enough.

Day 14: Run. Run. Run.  Today in the middle of the snow my mom and I ran the 5K turkey trot.  My mom  won first place in her age group and so she got a free turkey.  I was fourth in my age group so I got the gratification of finishing the race.  I have slacked off a little bit on my training and so I was impressed that I could even run the entire time.  Thank goodness my mom was running with me.  We keep each other going.

30 Thankful Days

Day 10: Rescued!  I have already mentioned how excited I am about going down to 75% time.  I still get health insurance and all of that great stuff.  I just won't have to work every. single. day!  I am really looking forward to January.  Today it really hit me as we sat down and sorted out our kids on our caseloads.  I really love my job and I love the people I work with, but I love Grant more.  I have felt like such a terrible mother.  Especially when Grant screams for Aubrey when he is mad.  It just about breaks my heart.  I know my boss understands and has tried to help me as much as she can.  I really appreciate her.  I am just so very grateful for my work right now.

Day 11: Homemade Bread.  Today at one of my home visits a mom was baking homemade sour dough bread.  It smelled so good!  Right as I was leaving the bread got done.  She gave me a slice.  It was so yummy.  I have really learned to like sour dough bread as I have gotten older.  She could see I was being sincere and so she just gave me a whole loaf.  Wow!  How wonderful.  I came home and made soup for dinner.  Nothing is better than homemade soup and bread.

Day 12: The Rain.  I love the rain and I was so happy to see it raining this afternoon.  I wish it would rain all day.
